When Brittney asked me to guest post for her, I was so excited I started clapping right there at my desk (one of many “cool” things I do when I get exciting mail, along with verbal exclamations and actually asking questions out loud) – then she mentioned the topic, and I was totally sold. One of the many reasons I love Britt is her love of animals and her huge heart for their welfare, so when I was asked to write about my own little cat, I was all over it!
This, ladies and gents, is Miss Rose Kitten. She was named Rose after the Doctor Who character (told you I was one of the cool kids!), but answered more readily to “Kitten”, and has since become kind of a hybrid, although she mostly goes by “Kit Kit”. It’s pretty fitting – though she’s grown from a little puffball who sat in my hands to a sleek, well proportioned lady, she still has a total kitten heart. She’s definitely got her own voice and personality, so much so that I left a “how to” guide for my dad when he was cat-sitting in January – complete with instructions on batting, cat volleyball, and hide and seek.
I have a ridiculous amount of love for this cat. Honestly? I’ve actually had conversations with my boy about what we’re going to do if I end up loving the cat more than my own child!! I’ve never had a pet I’ve felt such a link with before – as a kitten, she’d hop into the shower with me, get totally soggy and come our wrapped in a clean towel, and get blowdried along with my hair. She wants to be involved with anything I’m doing – reading the newspaper? She’s ON the paper. Marking papers? On the pile. Watching TV? She has her own designated Movie Spot on the couch. And don’t even get me started on unpacking the groceries. When I get home in the evenings from work, it’s Postbox Time. She’ll run over to the front door and wait for me to take of my shoes, open it up, and carry her outside for 30 seconds to get the letters. In summer she’ll come out on a leash. If she were a person, she’d totally be an athlete. Games are her favourite thing in the world – we have a fluffy ball hanging from a string from our banister, and every night we’ll hear little thuds of cat leaps as we’re watching TV. Paper balls, tennis balls – anything that rolls, she’ll play football with, batting it along the ground as I tackle her down. We’ll go to one end of a room together where she’ll flop down on her side, ready for me to scoot her along the carpet as she “paddles” her way forward. It’s PRICELESS. And she even helps with the cooking!
What I love most about my little miss isn’t just her adorable little quirks. Or the fact that she will always be there for a hug after a hard day, or to cuddle under a blanket with while I’m cold. It’s the way she just seems to tune in to what’s going on. I don’t know how many times I’ve been sad, or ill, or crying, and she’ll just trot on delicately over and rub her head on my shoulder, or lean her forehead on mine. How she’ll flop down and start paddling across the floor by herself to make me laugh when I’m feeling stressed. How she’ll sacrifice the “fat lap” (she ALWAYS cuddles up with the boy, not me!) if I’m feeling a little low and come over to snuggle with me instead. Our pets may not be able to speak English (you have no idea how badly I wanted a talking cat as a kid. Salem was my hero!), but I’m certain, especially Miss Rose Kitten, they’re more in tune with our ups and downs than we think.
I was told once that pets’ personalities reflect those of their owners. And if it’s true, it makes me smile to wonder what this says about me. I know no matter what, I can count on my little cat. I don’t know what I’d do without her. And seriously? A default Scrabble partner? I think I’m just about the luckiest girl in the world!
I am so not a cat person (mainly because I’m allergic, ugh) but this makes me want a cat! I love that she interacts with you so much, I’ve had so many friends whose cats just hide all the time and never come out. That would make me sad. I love the pictures, too, priceless!
Sweet was SO shocked when we moved in together – he’d grown up with two cats who didn’t really like to be touched and just kind of ran away. Rose is the polar opposite!! 🙂
This pulls at my heart SO much.
We just started taking our cat with us for the quick trips to grab milk or something. We’ve been taking our dog, but now he’s been making it along for the ride and he loves it.
I cannot imagine what I would do without any of my pets. They’re always there, in their own way, when I need them. So I can relate to this really, really well.
Also? She’s adorable!
Aww thanks!! Does yours have a little leash??
First off, that is a BEAUTIFUL cat. Seriously beautiful.
Second, “I’ve actually had conversations with my boy about what we’re going to do if I end up loving the cat more than my own child!!”
ME TOO. About Riley, our dog.
And I think it’s impossible — I mean, pregnancy fills you with hormones that are designed to make you love your child more than anything on Earth — BUT I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who worried about this!
Third, she sounds like the coolest cat I’ve ever heard of! My cat growing up was definitely not that affectionate/intelligent. She was more the stereotypical everything-is-about-me kind of cat. But Rose seems like a real sweetheart, and your bond sounds incredible.
LOL YES!! I’m not the only one!! I know it’s impossible but I love her SO much it’s ridiculous 🙂
Oh. My. God.
This might just be the most adorable thing I’ve read all year.
Seriously, even if you didn’t like vlogging, I think Rose might have a future as a famous vlogger.
I want to see videos of Rose being adorable.
LOL I definitely have a couple. I’ll have to post them! I was totally worried about posting this with our recent talk (“thank you for not writing about kittens” LOL) but I couldn’t help myself! Maybe we’ll vlog together next time 🙂
This post made me go, “Awwww…” I loved it! It’s amazing how a pet can really become so much apart of our lives, and how their little quirks and the little things they do mean so much. We’ve almost had our little pup for 6 months, and I really feel like we’ve had her for years, and I can’t imagine life without her.
I know hey! She’s totally a member of our little “family” – I couldn’t imagine life without her at all!
I so want a kitten!
Unfortunately, in our apartment complex they don’t allow cats 😦
We found that too, I had struggles for YEARS trying to find apartments that allowed cats – and the ones that did were usually the more expensive ones 😦 We really lucked out where we are now. I wish more apartments allowed cats – the local Humane Society is overrun with kitties and nobody can adopt so many of them because of stupid apartment laws 😦
She’s adorable! I want a cat, but I have three dogs so it wouldn’t work out too well. But my dog Cleo, who I’ve had since before I was married, is like my child. I love her so much it’s silly!
Oh wow THREE dogs? Are they little? 🙂
I love the picture at the end of the post! Looks like quite the scrabble competitor.
This post makes me wish I had a cat, but I can’t have one since I am allergic to them. 😦 I think it would help to have a little companion to keep me company and greet me when I walk in the door at the end of the day!
I can’t get over her little Scrabble picture. PERFECT timing 🙂
I’ve heard of people outgrowing allergies! My brother and my dad were allergic growing up, but now neither of them have a problem being around her. I hope you grow out of yours – nothing beats a little cat hug at the end of the day!
Cute! Pets are so wonderful… My dog turns 9 this month! Seems so old, I’m thinking of a post to mark her birthday!
Oh wow! You should definitely do a birthday post!!
oh man!! I love that last scrabble photo! That is priceless.
PETS ARE AWESOME. And they totally know when you are sick/sad/upset. It’s amazing!
My dad said my old dog (a black Lab named Kimo) used to stay by the couch where I would lay FOR HOURS to make sure I wasn’t gonna fall off. I miss him!
LOL awwww that’s adorable!!
I am not an animal person myself but I can totally appreciate those who are. Looks like you love your little kitty a lot. Totally precious.
I’m the same way with dogs – I’m not a dog person by any means but I love seeing people who are and how much they love their dogs 🙂
Hahaha awww she’s so cute!
AAAAAAH! I love my kitty too – even though I think she is a little insane. She doesn’t jump in the shower with me, but she does hang out on the edge of the tup when I take a bath and lets her tail fall in the water. Animals rule. So much more than people!
DEFINITELY lol. I’ve often told David I love her more than I like most people!! She doesn’t jump in the shower any more, but she does the side-tub tail-in-the-water too!!
sooo adorable! and she used to take showers with you? that is hilarious because when i was a kid, one of the cats loved to sit on the edge of the tub and bat at you from in between the shower curtain & liner and once she fell in. angriest cat ever that day!
i am such a cat person!
LOL that made me laugh out loud!! Poor kitty… but you have to love the batting 🙂
What a SWEET SWEET post!!! Kitties are so amazing, aren’t they?
We have a one-year-old little bundle of fur named Wedge. He’s quite the interesting cat, but he does not like cuddling at all. My wife and I are hoping he’ll grow into a cuddler!
Rose never used to be a huge cuddler either – she kind of grew into it. There’s definitely hope 🙂
Oh gorgeous! I’m so glad that you have kitty <3, sometimes there is nothing better in the world 🙂
Hahahha you’re so cute.
Ah, she’s so adorable. I want one!
She is SO. GORGEOUS. Like a wee little cat doll. I’d put her in my pocket and never, ever give her back.
Yes, cats are incredibly perceptive to your moods and needs. I often found my cat came up for a cuddle just when I needed it most. Bless them.
Enjoy the journey.
I think cats are cute but I’m allergic. Jaco’s grandpa has a cat and loves that furball so much. When we go over there I just sit there and sneeze and hope my eyes don’t swell shut. Haha!
I love my two doggies though, they’re like my kids. Yeah, I’m one of those people.
Miss Em, it sounds like you have the most awesome cat in the history of the universe. You are making me regret my allergies. 🙂
i can totally relate (as you already know) cohen HATES showers and definitely does not like the blow dryer. but he definitely loves to cuddle. especially when he knows i need it. gotta love pets.
and your little miss rose is adorable! i love the piture with the blanket over her head!
ps.. cohen was named after seth cohen from the oc. i fell in love with his name back when i was sophomore and have wanted to name something (a pet or child, yes a child, don’t judge me) that! so glad i got the chance. it totally fits him.
